I am not going to write any long stories. So, by implementing the rule of cutting a long story short, let’s start with some tips before you begin the process of cleaning your mechanical gaming keyboard.

Before you start

Cleaning a mechanical keyboard is easy, but it will definitely take a lot of your time, so you better do this when you are completely free from all the other important work of yours, maybe like on Sundays? Maybe. It depends.

It’s always a good idea to take a picture of your keyboard layout so you have a reference of where all the keys should be after getting them out for cleaning and fitting them again.

Cleaning Keycaps

To get all the dust cleaned up, which makes your keyboard disgusting, the first thing you want to do is to get all the keycaps off the keyboard. And for that, you will have to need a keycap remover. You can find one here.

The keycap remover just makes it a lot easier to pull all the keys of a mechanical keyboard instead of pulling them off the keyboard by hand. Just get them out one by one. Make sure you pull out the bigger keys with more extra care, for example, the space bar key and shift key, because they have stabilizers under the keys, just gently slide out one side first, then the other side to remove the keycap.

Once you have removed all the keys, now put them into a bowler dipper. Add water and a little bit of dishwashing soap. Stir a little bit. Do make sure that the water is warm but not too hot. Wait about 20 to 30 minutes, now get the keys out, wash them thoroughly with a towel. Now let them dry, and this is when you can switch to the keyboard plate.

Cleaning The Keyboard Plate

The keyboard plate is the place where most of the dust is. To clean the plate of the keyboard, you will have to need a brush. You can use any paintbrush for this work. I will recommend you try this one.

Now just sweep through in between the keys of the keyboard to wipe out all the dirt. Make sure you do this gently. Do not push too hard the brush on the plate of the keyboard. For the sides, use a microfiber cloth with a bit of alcohol.

Reinstalling The Keycaps

Remember, I told you to take a photo of your keyboard’s layout from your smartphone in the “before you start” section? I hope you did. Now it is the time to install all the keys again at the exact places, and you can use the reference photo you took to do all this.

Now head to KeyboardTestor.com, and test if your keyboard is working fine or not. Most probably it is gonna work fine if you have done everything carefully.
